We here at HacknMod love fiber optics.  Besides transmitting data across the world at the speed of light, fiber optics can also be used to create spectacular lighting elements.  This fiber optic chandelier features wireless controls along with RGB color selection:

The chandelier uses marbles as diffusers at the end of each fiber strand.  The entire display is controlled via Xbee modules with an Arduino for the brain.  The chandelier above is a bit rough around the edges, but below is a similar fiber optic lighting fixture we featured previously.

Hopefully this project has inspired you to dive into the world of fiber optics.  If you’re interested in building your own, pick up some affordable end-glow or side-glow fiber and get started.  Check out the chandelier’s detailed project instructions to learn more.
