Magnetic levitation is awesome: From lightbulbs to trains and even hoverboards.  This project, however, adds a whole nother level of awesome.  Instead of using a static electromagnet, this electromagnet is attached to a CNC-like device with an X, Y, and Z axis.  The result: an fascinating method of manipulating physical objects in “zero gravity.”  In the video below, the device is used to model planetary orbits.

The device uses a Hall effect sensor to determine the strength of the magnetic field and adjusts an electromagnet accordingly.  Furthermore, the entire system uses a projector and webcam to interact with the floating object.  For example, it can cast “shadows” as if the levitating object were a light source.  Specific project details are unavailable, but electromagnetic levitation is pretty straightforard.  Check out the three links below to begin your own levitation project!
